Jezebel Root: An American Folk Tradition
Jezebel Root is deeply embedded in American folk magic, particularly in rootwork and Hoodoo traditions. Jezebel Root is widely used to enhance personal power, influence, love, and financial success. Though strongly associated with women’s magic, anyone can use it to amplify their authority or attract prosperity.
- Attracting Wealth and Prosperity—Traditionally carried in a green flannel mojo bag, Jezebel Root is believed to aid in securing promotions, increasing earnings, and attracting financial success.
- Love and Relationship Influence—A red flannel mojo bag containing Jezebel Root, orris root, dried rosebuds, a sweet flag, catnip, and Adam and Eve’s Root is a traditional charm for attracting a wealthy husband.
- Commanding Respect & Influence – In Southern magical folklore, Jezebel Root is linked to a powerful, charismatic woman who uses her charm and wit to attract, persuade, and influence those around her.

Jezebel Oil: The Ultimate Commanding Formula

Jezebel Oil is a powerful commanding and domination oil originating in the Southern United States, most notably Louisiana. Historically, it was used by those seeking a wealthy husband and by prostitutes to attract affluent clients. Over time, it has evolved into a versatile formula used to manifest financial success, influence others, and enhance personal magnetism.
Common Uses of Jezebel Oil
- Love Spells – Enhances desirability, attracts admirers, attracts financially stable partners, and encourages wealthy partners to be generous. Similar to Gold Digger Oil and Spoil Me Oil, it is believed to inspire lavish spending.
- Money & Success Spells – Aids in financial magic, securing high-paying opportunities, increasing cash flow, and outshining competitors. Often used in business negotiations and deal-making.
- Cursing & Jinxing – Some practitioners employ Jezebel Oil in domination workings, using it to undermine rivals, weaken competitors, or create obstacles for those standing in their way—often called the “Jezebel Curse.”

The Authentic Jezebel Root: What Sets Us Apart

Many practitioners struggle to find genuine Jezebel Root, often encountering misidentified substitutes. Unlike mass-market alternatives, our Jezebel Root is carefully sourced from the select species—a Louisiana iris in the Hexagonae series (Iris ser. Hexagonae), native to the southeastern United States. After extensive research into historical accounts, we discovered that the original Jezebel Root was most likely harvested from Iris brevicaulis. See the footnote for a deep dive into the taxonomy.

At Practical Witch Sanctuary, we grow this rare botanical organically and with reverence, ensuring it is harvested at the most potent astrological and lunar alignments. By preserving the root’s authenticity, we maintain its traditional magical power for those who seek true prosperity and influence.
Note: Orris root is sometimes called Jezebel Root, but Orris (Iris germanica, Iris pallida) is traditionally known as Queen Elizabeth Root.

What’s Inside Practical Witch Jezebel Oil?
For a true domination oil, Jezebel Root is blended with potent herbs and oils traditionally used in commanding spells. Experienced practitioners have field-tested our finely tuned adaptation of one of the oldest formulas for maximum effectiveness.
Unlike common versions on the market, we do not use vegetable oils that spoil quickly or mineral oil derived from petroleum. Instead, we use organic jojoba oil, known for its longevity, stability, and ability to amplify magical intentions. Practical Witch offers whole Jezebel Roots and Jezebel Oil here.

How to Perform a Jezebel Spell
This is a simple Jezebel Spell to attract a wealthy partner or to draw in money.

Materials:
A pinch each of Ginger, Cinnamon, Basil
One spell candle in your choice of color: Purple (for all uses), Green or Gold (for money-related intentions), or Red (for love-related intentions)
5 Green Spell Candles
Jezebel Oil
A Nail, Knife, or Pen to carve your candle
A Piece of Paper and a Pen
A Large Fireproof Plate
Instructions:
- Write your name three times on the paper.
- Turn the paper 90 degrees to the right and write your intention three times over your name.
- Fold the paper towards your body, turn it 90 degrees to the right, and fold again. Repeat one more time.
- Lay the paper flat and sprinkle the cinnamon, basil, and ginger over it.
- Place a plate on top of the paper.
- Carve your name and intention into the candle. You can use a sigil or symbols, such as carving your initials, a heart (for love), and a dollar sign.
- Anoint your candle by rubbing Jezebel Oil from the center to the wick and then from the center downward. Alternately, anoint your candle from the wick to the base (to draw in). Place the candle in a holder and set it on the plate.
- Surround the central candle with six green spell candles.
- Light the central candle first, then the others in a clockwise direction.
- Place a drop of Jezebel oil over your heart (for love) or rub it between your palms (for money).
- Focus on your intention and recite a prayer, affirmation, or Psalm 23 or 112.

Modifications
Using a Container Candle Instead of Six Spell Candles
You can use a single container candle—such as a 10-day or 50-hour candle—rather than six individual spell candles. To do this, follow the same instructions as above but with these modifications:
Use a permanent marker to draw sigils and symbols on the outside of the glass. To mirror the energy of the original spell setup, draw five dollar signs ($) evenly spaced around the candle, representing the five surrounding spell candles in the original instructions.
Choose a red, green, purple, or white container candle.
Anoint the top of the candle around the wick with Jezebel oil, moving in clockwise circles to attract prosperity.
Footnotes
Do not ingest! Like many other irises, Jezebel Roots are poisonous and could cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fever. Prolonged skin contact with the roots can irritate, so do not wear it as a pendant without wrapping it in the traditional cloth pouch.
Taxonomy Notes from Friday Gladheart:
Some retailers offer Iris hexagona as Jezebel Root, and a grimoire on poison plants published in 2024 identifies Jezebel Root as Iris fulva. The former is commonly known as the Dixie iris, and the latter as the copper iris. Although both are effective as Jezebel Root in rituals and magical practices, my research indicates that Iris brevicaulis (formerly classified as Iris foliosa) is the more traditional choice based on historical descriptions from practitioners.
Historical accounts and the geographical regions where it has been used in American folk magic and Hoodoo indicate that Jezebel Root is a Louisiana iris. Therefore, it must have always been one of these five: I. fulva, I. hexagona, I. brevicaulis, I. giganticaerulea, or I. nelsonii. We can refine our identification based on historical records and phenotypic differences from this.
Practitioners in the 20th century described collecting it in bogs. Although I. brevicaulis—also called Blue Flag—grows in boggy areas, the other four species in the series also thrive in such conditions. However, Jezebel Root has always been described as blue, which narrows the possibilities to irises with flowers in the blue-to-purple range: I. brevicaulis, I. hexagona, and I. giganticaerulea.
Oral accounts from practitioners in Louisiana and around the Ozarks, the Ouachitas, and the Mississippi Valley describe Jezebel Root as the short iris with “turned” stems that help turn things around in magic. This significantly narrows the possibilities, as I. brevicaulis is the smallest of the blue Louisiana irises and the only one with stalks that grow back and forth (often called the Zig-Zag iris).
All that said, irises readily cross-breed and self-hybridize. Louisiana irises are tetraploid (having four sets of chromosomes), and while it is magically correct to use any of the five species as Jezebel Root, I believe I. brevicaulis holds an extra touch of magic from a historical perspective (noted above) and botanical perspective. It is cytologically distinctive, with a karyotype featuring a pair of unusually long submedian chromosomes. It also exhibits a secondary constriction in the long arm and one pair of short chromosomes with a secondary constriction next to the very small short arm.
It’s just magical!
